I have been training for six months and will be running the Marathon of the Palm Beaches this Sunday. 90% of my training has been on a treadmill. My Sunday long runs are with a group outside. The treadmill has allowed me to avoid the Florida summer heat and humidity and helped me to stay injury free. It is great for interval training and speed work, as well as hills. The good part is that your joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles do not take the pounding of the road. The bad point is the same...once you go on the road to race, you will feel the pounding much more than if you had acclimated yourself to the road through your training. Pick your poisen. I am 54 years old so I chose to save myself, avoiding injury, in order to have a susttained training period without complications. My performance on the road tends to duplicate my performance on the treadmill.
