For ideas on tapering, I highly recommend checking out Dave McGovern's website (plug "world class racewalking" into your favorite search engine).
I've used a 1-2 week taper most of the time, but last year I racewalked a 50K trail race (Fairfield) the day after a 10K race.
I paid for that decision during the last 5 miles of the 50K. :-)
