When I first realized that I wanted to run the NYC Marathon, I went to a class given by one of the coaches for the New York Road Runners club and the first thing the coach told me was not to try to train for a marathon in my first year of running. She said it takes at least 2 years to build yourself up to marathoning.
So follow the great advice here and you'll be doing great in 2005. It'll be here before you know it!
