Heidi,
People here would love to work with you, but let's pick another goal other than a Fall 2003 marathon.
I went to an Excel formula to see if you could indeed raise your mileage by 10%/week and get to 26.2 miles (starting at 5 mpw now) before the Fall 2003 season is over. You cannot.
Experts suggest a maximum weekly increase of 10% in your mileage. My experience is that the rule is OK for a few weeks, but when it is projected out to 16 or 17 weeks in your case, the increase becomes impossible to sustain.
How about this? Start to increase your weekly mileage by 10%/week for a few weeks. Enter a few 5k races this fall. Plan to enter some 10k races next spring. Think about the Army 10 miler for Fall 2004. Think about the Virginia Beach 1/2 marathon for Spring 2005. Then let's try for a Fall 2005 marathon.
Somebody here will be glad to pace you on your choice of Fall 2005 marathons, provided that you have spent 2003-2005 building yourself up (cross training, running, weights, good diet, etc).
Stay in touch.
Dave W.
