Fairfield: 24 August. They offer a half marathon (1 "almost full loop" plus 2 more full loops), marathon ("1 almost full loop" plus 5 more full loops) and 50K (7 full loops)
All of the race is in Jefferson Park just south of Fairfield, Iowa. The course is mostly groomed trails or soccer field caliber grass, with a small amount of park road pavement. Roots and rocks are almost non-existant; you can get close to road speed on this route.
Much (but not all) of the course is well shaded.
There are two aid stations: one at the start and one roughly half-way through the loop.
I found that the organizers were friendly. There is some good competition; if I remember correctly the winner of the 50K ran 3:4X and the last place finisher was a bit over 7 hours.
One neat feature is that you can camp out in the park instead of staying at a hotel; some runners did this.
As far as getting an application; I can't remember the appropriate site; either the Des Moines running club site or one of the standard ultramarathon sites.
As far as awards, they offer a finisher's shirt for the 50K and various age group awards.
e-mail me if you have more questions; you can see some photos from this race at my photo album at
