I read an article in which a dietician estimates that in most aerobic excercise activities - only about 30-40% of the calories you burn are fat calories. Which got me thinking, and doing a few calculations. The results I came up with are pretty discouraging. Here is my logic: 1 lb of adipose contains 3500 calories of energy. So if you were to burn 1200 calries/day from excercising.. which is ALOT.. in actuality only about 400 of those burned calories would be from fat. Thus, to lose 1 lb of fat and the tremendously high activity level I mentioned (12oo calories/day), it would take 9 days! To put this into perspective, 1200 calories per day of excercise, for somebody with my stats (5'8" male 27yrs 165 lbs), comes out to the equivalent of swimming 1 mile at a moderate pace, doing 2 hours on an elliptical at a moderate exertion, and 30-45 minutes on a treadmill.
Or to put it in terms of running, it would be like running about 10 miles a day for 9 days straight.
It is just hard to believe that ALL THIS ACTIVITY could only burn off 1 lb of fat.
So, I was wondering if someone could confirm my calculations/reasoning. If they are correct, it is a wonder anyone ever loses any weight!?!?
