Rob W, I am not deliberately being dense, nor am I trying to be combative.
My question is: where is there wisdom in what Bambi says? (After all, she's written quite a bit).
Is it 1) we shouldn't "lower the bar"? Actually, I agree with that sentiment. What I said about aiming for a slower time was this:
Someone asked why they had cramped up in a marathon past mile 20. They mentioned that they had done 40 miles a week.
My reply was that, when I only trained 40 miles a week, I could NOT come close to reaching the marathon times that my shorter races predicted. For the record; my 10K's have been 41-43 min; 1/2's between 1:34-1:37, but when I tried for a 3:20 marathon, I blew up badly and shuffled to a 3:45. When I went out slower, I improved to a 3:38.
So, I needed to either aim lower OR find a way to run more miles per week.
2) If you are wondering about "novices giving advice"; fair enough; I've been honest about my results and, well, if someone wants to run faster than I run, they should listen to the faster runners. My only beef with Bambi here is that she (he?) says that others are stupid, yet was not honest enough to say what her training did for her.
Hey, if someone improved from the 3:30's to sub 3:20, PLEASE tell me how you did it! I'd love to know.
Anyway, Rob, (or anyone else) feel free to reply to me either here, in this forum, or to my personal e-mail address.
