Know Yourself Evan

Evan, I am not highly experienced, having just run my first Marathon, but here is my two cents. KNOW YOURSELF! What I mean is that you should read as much as possible and recognize that there is a ton of advice books and people can give you, but in the end you must know your own capabilities and be realistic. I began running seriously a year ago and have since run 5-k, 10-k, half marathons, and a Marathon. I succeeded in all by following my own pace and running very conservative races the first time at any distance. If you finish and feel that you could have done better you probably followed a good conservative strategy. You may be a bit disappointed that you didn't run faster but remember your strategy going in was to finish and prove you could go the distance safely and enjoyably. So read the opinions but keep in mind that if you are very fit and determined one 20 miler might be OK. Some say you must have run 26.2 before running an official Marathon. Some say 1 twenty miler, 2 twenty milers, etc. Just remember if you go out slow, pay attention to your body, and have the goal of finishing and not a time goal, you will do fine. I also recommend finding someone on the course to run the race with if possible for your first Marathon. It worked for me. Good luck!
