In the past few years, during the marathon training build-up phase, I have taken gels along with me on my long runs. This year I have changed strategy, with good results. The local bike shop sells a product called XLR8, a syrupy orange tasting liquid that you dilute with water. I carry it with me on the run and sip on it so that I get a steady supply of fuel rather than the up and down pattern you get with gel packs.
