Calf Charlie Horse after Unusually Poor Distance Training Run Dave 4/15/13 11:53:20 AM ET
I am one month away from marathon day. I have been doing well on my distance runs until yesterday. Couldn't hold pace on my second set of 9 miles (9-18 which were supposed to be race pace). Felt some cramping twinges the last few miles. Pace had bottomed out and I was resting every mile. Afterward, walking, I hit the ground with hard cramps in calves that wouldn't release for several minutes. Made one calf quite sore. I understand about magnesium and potassium, etc., as I am a registered dieitian. It was a cold day, so heat was not a factor. I've run dozens of marathons. I'm not sure why I bonked on this run. I did feel a bit overtrained earlier in the week, so I took a few easy days prior to this workout. Being almost 57 years old surely has nothing to do with it! No, I did not take electrolytes for this run in the low 40s with wind. I'm hoping it's that simple. I did this same run (a couple miles less) 2 weeks ago with great results. Didn't take eletrolytes then either, on a warm day. Any ideas?
