Another FAST sellout...with hiccups MG 3/27/13 6:23:19 PM ET
Marine Corps sold out in 2+ hours. There were technical issues again with Active. Marine Corps released a quick and thorough response to the glitch and should be commended. Still, the overall challenge remains—how to sign up entrants without jumping through hoops and allowing an equitable chance for all those who want to enter have a chance to do so. The internet, Facebook, and the event site themselves (complete with a countdown clock) goad the impending stampede. Many don't want a lottery, others waste hours trying to register electronically, and others sign up because it WILL sell out and will secure the spot without a 100% commitment to run the race. These challenges are evident at almost all the major races now; Disney (so far) seems to have avoided the snafus though they sell their races out quickly as well. One good benefactor is this: runners may give smaller races a second look. Whatever the future holds, I hope race directors have a frank conversation their registration components/providers and come up with some long overdue solutions.
