You are correct MG - considering the circumstances, it makes sense to cancel because of all the difficulties for those in the area as well as those travelling from both sort-of near and ultra-far away locations.

Unfortunately, I can't help but think this is once again a money grab by NYRR and no different than any decisions they make these days. Wonderful, they are allowing people to "cancel" with guaranteed entry next year. But, why is "cancel" without a refund? What they are saying is that NYRR is going to be collecting fees from all registered runners this year whether they are able to run or not - even for reasons beyond their control, and regardless of what kind of event NYRR is ultimately able to put on.

There is no doubt that whatever NYRR and the city can pull off, runners will not be getting the same experience, nor race put on that they are entitled to for all the fees paid. Visitors to NYC are not going to be getting much of an NYC experience as the city is going to take time to recover. Yes, it makes a really good story to tell, how the race must go on, it's dedicated to NYC/rebuilding, etc., etc. But beyond that, it's just wrong for so many more reasons.
