Relaxin is the hormone produced in pregnancy to get a woman's body ready to deliver a baby (that is probably too big because of the great nutrition available, but that is another story). Relaxin does what it sounds like, it relaxes tendons & joints. The problem is that those tendons and joints stay relaxed for several months after child birth. Starting back after delivery should be much more gradual because of this issue. Several elite women have made it seem easy, but they were highly trained before and during their pregnancies. BE CAREFUL.

That said, consider a treadmill so that you can walk if you feel up to it while the baby naps. On the other hand the best advice I ever got was to nap while the baby napped so you would be ready for the next time the baby decided to stay up all night. No one can rest for you, no one can recouperate from the pregnancy for you. It took nine months to make that baby, so give the recouperation time as well. Even more time if you are breast feeding. Once you have finished that (or if you never started) the first thing you should think about is getting back to pre-pregnancy weight. You cannot diet efficiently if you are nursing. You also don't want to start serious training with too much extra weight either.

Read about Magda Lewy Boulet, she is an elite woman who trained quite a bit on a treadmill after her baby.

Also, enjoy the baby. It really is true that they grow up too fast. Consider a jog stroller once the baby is able to carry its head unassisted. Plenty of time to get into training and racing.
