I try to alternate water and Gatorade, but usually end up switching to all Gatorade in the final 6-10 miles; at that point, it helps give me some of the kick I need.
On long runs and in marathons I usually do my first Gu at 90 minutes in, then aim for another one every 30-40 minutes (a total of 4 or 5 for the race).
