my "invitation" as a way of trying to draw Observer into another bashing exchange, but it honestly wasn't. I know it's often hard to communicate tone and intent in BB posts, but I was sincere in my desire to understand where she is coming from on these issues. And I don't think it was an inappropriate topic for this board, given that this is the board where Observer has done most of her posting -- and that ultimately a lot of the issues she is addressing go to the largest, macro-level questions of what training is about.
If what Observer is saying is that we too often mistake the details -- the laces, the Yasso 800s vs. the mile repeats, the PowerGel vs. Gu, whatever -- for what is really important, which is the larger process, I couldn't agree more. I've always thought that the real heart of the marathon lies not in the 26.2 miles you run on race day, but in the full experience of the "training marathon" that leads you there -- the days when you push yourself out the door even though you don't want to, the arduous long runs, the half-mile when it all just seems to come together. But that's just the way I approach it.
Observer, when you say we're mistaking endeavor for human experience, do you mean that too many of us are mistaking what is for most of us a hobby/diversion/sideline
