hi dave, i like the step-back weeks. i used hal's plan for my very first marathon, and i'm still in the game, 8 years and 9 marathons later. i think the 2 best things the step back weeks provide you are (1) a break as the mileage gets up there and (2 advanced class) the extra time/discipline/structure if you're new to this. good luck in your training, and do not hesitate if i can be of further help.
