Heather, I'm also into destination marathons, as I'm slowly working towards full membership in the 50 States Marathon Club. Here are some suggestions for you.
Detroit in October. The Detroit Free Press Marathon is one of the best in the country. Well organized, flat and fast. You also go over the bridge into Canada, then back into the U.S. through the tunnel.
Baltimore in September. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Also well organized and relatively flat.
Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, MN in June is a destination run for many people. You are bussed to the start of the course, then run along Lake Superior back to the city.
Chicago in October is also good, but you'll be one among about 40,000 runners. If you don't mind large crowds, Chicago is a good one. Since this is a destination run, you should plan to stay in a hotel outside the city, which will be much less expensive. There is a great transit system which you can count on to get you in and out of the city on race day.
Those are the ones I suggest off the top of my head. Good luck.
