Yesterday, some people in the running group were commenting that they have been feeling "tight" and slow during their runs recently. These comments came from people who have been running in continuous snow and ice conditions since the first snow on November 27.
After more than two months of running in snow and ice conditions is this: In order to prevent injury on snow covered and icy roads, runners begin to "short step" ... the stide shortens, and after a period of time you lose the stretch in the tissues. The runner develops the slow twitch fibers, but not the fast twitch because of nt being able to do a good balance of speed work. One solution is to find long hills, which usually are kept bare by the highway crews, and, after a two mile warmup, run the hills hard .... but, you have to take this approach to running hills in a progressive conservative way if you have been subject to a couple of months of slow running.
Another place to be able to possibly get in some speed work to balance your slow twitch and fast twitch is to find the bus route to a school. The bus route streets and roads are usually kept more free of ice and snow.
