As you may have already discovered, there is no nationally accepted age standard for youth participation in 26.2 mile races. Thus, it falls entirely upon each race director to impose appropriate age criteria for their event.

Generally, the minimum age is either 18 or 16 years for marathon entry, you just have to check the FAQs of the particular race your son might be interested in. I happen to know that Chevron Houston actually allows 12-year olds to enter. Such a "policy" is patently absurd in my view.
