It works like this: Let's suppose your ING/NYC goal next Nov. is to run a sub-3:20. In order to achieve that, most performance calculators say you'll need 1:35 half-marathon speed. So if you post that time at the Air Force Half, you'll be on track for great things a few weeks later in New York. Without the benefit of such a time trial, you will only be guessing about your actual fitness level on marathon day. And that's a great way to negate months and months of training.
