Running with 5lbs handheld wieghts

Circa 1982 I bought a pair of small dumbells (must be thin to not hit legs), added tennis racket grip tape, and ran with them. This provides more exorcise additional time, and not carrying them makes me feel I breath easier and I can run longer than I trained for.

Perhaps I am just not finding it, but I don't see anyone else mentioning doing this. I don't see calorie counter adjustments for weight like I found for speed, or race time predictors based upon shorter (with weights) paces, or training charts.

History: 4 USMC Marathons, always in good shape for a half dozen miles with weights, and just "bulling it through" for the long run without them. 1983, 1984, 1986 & 1987 (3.7 - 5.1 hrs)

Future? 2011 USMC Marathon, for the 1st time without a military discount. Other firsts, actually selecting shoes, not whatever a store had on sale. I am measuring heartrates, weighing myself, modifying diet, using a treadmill, and generally paying attention to fitness details that I used to leave to my former employer.

Current: 4 miles 6mph with 5lbs, hope to run every 2 to 4 days, just like the old days...
