I was in your shoes a few years ago, at the same age. I tried improving my marathon time with just increased distance and it was not working. It wasn't until I added speed work to my weekly schedule that I was able to make significant improvement on my time. I'm 61 now. I realize I'm not going to set any more PRs. But I still use the speed work to maintain decent times. In fact, I'm ramping it up during my current training cycle to try to get back to where I was a couple of years ago.
