Thanks for your comments and input.
Im doing the Soldier Marathon in Columbus, Georgia and there are not going to be any pace groups. The course sounds flatter than what I normally run.
I think my problem is probably the same problem that a lot of people have before attempting their first marathon. Its like riding a bicycle (and at least one other thing)you can describe the mechanics , draw diagrams and pie charts and make videos but it is impossible to describe exactly what its like until you do it and then you cant really describe it. Dans comment that I might just be fatigued which made my last long run so tough might be true. Ive just not done this enough to know or to know what I dont know—bad day or outside limits of athletic performance. My long run training pace may actually be my race pace and maybe I should slow down on long runs. Or maybe I actually could average sub-nine minute miles for 26 miles. I dont think Im going to know before I do my first one (and maybe not even then.) Race predictors just wont work...Zeke and Rita based on your repeated warnings, I will force myself not to go out to fast. Thanks for your encouragement and concern but I am really not that worried or nervous about finishing. Ive put in the work and, unless something bad happens, I will finish. I might finish with pride and a smile or I might finish laughing at myself (like my last long run) or I might finish a mass of protoplasmic sludge vaguely resembling a human being, eliciting both pity and revulsion from all who have the misfortune to view my sub-Caliban-like exterior—but I will finish. Any thoughts are appreciated.
I certainly understand that I am new at this but, without being to presumptuousI think that I might be national or even world class at TAPERING. I have this part of my training down to perfection. I seem to have a natural ability to consciously do less and less exercise. It almost seems that I have been preparing for the taper for my entire adult life. Im just gifted at cutting back and relaxing.
Recent conversations at my house: WIFE: Honey, the gutters need cleaning out. ME: Im sorry but Im TAPERING.
WIFE: Dear, would you please take out the garbage? ME: Id love to but Im TAPERING.
WIFE: Are you going to sit there and watch football all day? ME: Im not watching the gameIM TAPERING.
I think Ive read that the RECOVERY from a marathon takes three to six months?
