First off, I've never run 24 in training. But you have learned something...I hope. In your first post you talked about 24 miles at a 10:00 minute pace. Then you posted that you did the first 18.5 at a 9:40 pace and it seems you must have been feeling fine. This is the rookie/fatal "taking it out too fast" trap that even veteran marathoners can fall into. You're going to taper and race morning you'll feel GREAT and want to run those first 10-13 miles in record pace, DON'T. If the race you are doing has a pace group, find the 5 hour or 4:30 group and hang with them for the first 5 miles or so, then get into your own pace and hold steady till about 20-22. As Zeke said, you'll probably have the event & crowd energy going for you and you'll feel better than on your training run. By 22 you'll know if you're having a great day or if you just want to hold on. You need to feel like you are starting out TOO SLOW. Those seconds you take in the early miles will become minutes that you have to give back at the end...
slow and steady for your first one...and enjoy the sights and sounds, it only gets better. Good luck, have fun and report back! I'll bet you are faster that 5:59:59! -Rita
