Happened gradually. Twice I had to ice the heel (thought maybe it was a strained achilles or PF), and felt fine two days later. However, after the last 20 miler three weeks before Chicago, the heel and sole were bruised and experienced discomfort. I cut way back on the taper and iced. It did not seem to respond for two weeks, but I felt good during the last taper week. On Sunday, I went out strong, doing steady goal miles (and thankful for your Chicago training tip, Zeke!) until mile 12, when I noticed it. At 14 it was becoming painful, until at 16 it hurt too much to keep up the pace. I tried walk/run, but it degenerated into shuffling. Thank god Chicago offers beer at the finish! I had a very mild strained achilles last year, and wear a heel cup and stretch as a result. I switched the last pair of ascis 2150s at 360 miles, and had 40 on the new pair before Sunday. Orthotics have not been mentioned yet, but I'll run in a chicken suit if it gets me accross the line. Thanks for your interest.
