Qualifying for Boston and Avoiding Injury

I want to qualify for Boston! seem to be getting injured every each year. How do I achieve the speed without injury (run-walk-run isn't providing the speed). In spite of age I keep getting a little faster from 5k-1/2 marathon and no improvement on the longer runs. 7 years ago I began racing and the idea was to run one race to get a friend off my back. I had always been relatively fast - under 16 minute 5k - but never run anything over 10k. Without training, I ran a 25k in 2 hrs. Two years later while training for my first marathon I entered a 30k,misread a sign and ran an extra lap - 24 miles in just over 3 hrs...got hurt and missed the marathon. Since that time, every time I increase mileage to 3 runs per week and 35-45 miles, I run slower or get an injury occurs.Best marathon was 4hrs way slower than the 25k-37k times. I am 53 years old, 5'9" slight build at 165lbs. Recommendations please.
