Advice for 3rd marathon

I'm training for my 3rd marathon and still figuring out how to TRAIN and not just RUN HARD and FAR (like I love to!) every day! I have been sorta following Hal Higdons Inter. II training plan. Is there a difference between that and his Inter. I? Is one better? Should I be doing the advanced? I ran my first marathon faster than my 2nd and the 1/2 mar. I ran this summer was slower than my one last summer. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.. I think maybe running too high mileage every week? Or just not pushing hard enough? I just ran my first 20-miler for this upcoming one and avg. 8.35/mile and felt great (and with no food - just water). Do I determine MP splits by using the McMillan calculator? I'm still just a novice - I love learning from you all!
