Good luck finding the magic from last week. It might just have been that you had a bad week on your 18 mile run. I had a horrible 18 mile run when I first did that distance, but the next week on my 21 mile run I did much better. Like you I swallowed alot more GU on the 20 miler, but I really think that some weeks you just have bad runs.
