I have been using the 305 for the last few years and it has been outstanding. I do use the heart rate monitor but more as just a measurement to look at. It actually helped me isolate a potentially serious problem. When I was training for the Oklahoma Marathon in 2008, I noticed during my taper that I seemed to be struggling on runs that I was comfortable with just a few weeks ago. I had downloaded all my garmin information into my computer. So I went back and looked at it. Indeed my heart rate was on average about 30 beats higher. When I called my doctor, she immediately identified an issue related to my thyroid which was sorted out with some rest and care over the next month and a half or so and I have run 3 marathons since then. Just my 0.02
