Here is my advice: first, try to substantiate how much passion for distance running you possess. It's very possible the training commitment required may not appeal to you.
How can you find out? Set your sights on a half- marathon first. That race distance will be more than enough for a newbie to prepare for. Based on how you feel after running the half, you'll know for sure whether scaling up to marathon distance will be in your best interests.
