Finishing the marathon strong

I began running marathons about 2 years ago. I have been running for 7 years total, and I am 36 years old. I have used a training program that puts the long training run at 20 miles (Hal Higdon's intermediate). In my 3 marathon experiences, I have always struggled from mile 20 and by mile 22 my pace/mile decreases by 30+%. Recently I was running an 8:11 pace through 20 miles and finished the last 6.2 at an 11:30 pace. I drink 4-6 ounces of gatorade every 20 minutes or so, but do not take an anything else except "Endurolyte" pills from Hammer Nutrition for additional electrolyes. I can't figure out whether the training run is not long enough at 20 miles, or if me not eating or getting calories during the marathon is causing my struggles. As a side note my fastest recent half marathon was 1:38, and my goal in my last marathon was 3:40 which I missed by 15 minutes because of the last 6.2 miles. Thanks in advance for any advice.
