ouch, no wonder your times have dropped... can you get a second opinion or at least call the first doctor back and ask for something stronger. On the other hand, I am a wimp and would take the pain as a sign that "if it hurts, stop"... not a good thing to have to can a marathon you've decided to run, but you must give your body a chance to heal itself. There will be other races. Does it hurt to water jog, use the elliptical, stair stepper or bike? If you decide to cut back your mileage (which might be the only thing to do) you need to do something to keep up your fitness & keep from going crazy. Swimming might be the only alternative as some strokes use less hip movement, but it's not the best cross training. Give that hip a rest!
