I think what you might be missing most instead of your distance, especially if you are trying to decrease your time, is speed training, hill training and tempo training. try some hill workouts to boost your leg support, core workouts for glutes, etc. and also one mile repeats to get yourself faster. Don't worry about the mileage. I only ran up to 16 miles before my first marathon in January, qualified for Boston, and have run 5 marathons this year already and 2 more to go. Speed training has taken me down by almost 10 minutes since January marathon- at age 52 running a 3:20 marathon now- so I would recommend not being concerned about more 20 miles runs, but in building up your core, speed and hills for endurance and increasing V2O max
