The above reply is very accurate. My CC/Track coach in college said much the same thing. When guys would get injured freshman year (and they always would) because they would jack up their milage to try to run with the upper classman without having a good base, he would have them split runs during their recovery. He is a rediculously smart math person and the best he could figured a split run takes about 75% the effort of running it straight through. 12.5 miles split = 10 miles straight up.
