I think you can run a sub-4 marathon if you 1)stay with the pacing group (if you sign up for one) and 2)do not focus on the pain. Similar to you, I ran a 1:56 half. I signed up for the 4-hr. pacing group and I left them at mile 8 and they passed and left me behind at mile 22.
the balls of my feet were aching so bad that i walked up the last hill, which probably added about 10 minutes to my time. I know i would have run a sub-4 if i would have stayed with the group and if i did not focus on the pain.
