if you train well (close to 50 miles per week for at least 12 weeks)and the day of the race it's not too hot you shouldn't be TOO exhausted... but you'll be walking slowly and probably have trouble with stairs.. I found that walking down stairs backwards helped for the first 3-4 days...
part of the 'trick' is to rehydrate and refuel directly after the marathon, like within a half hour...walk a bit, take a nap and then walk a bit more that evening... to me that always seemed like going out for dinner after a nap... if you put in the miles in training, marathon day should be like graduation day... the next day you can wear your marathon shirt and proudly tell everyone who asks why you are walking slow that you ran NYC!
if race day is VERY hot or you don't train well, you might be truly miserable... even then you should be able to walk far enough to hail a cab and go out to eat, see a play or take the sightseeing bus... -Rita
