Hi Keith - look carefully at the Marathon website - whoever is organizing it should have the answer to most of your questions. IPOD use is dependent on the marathon - many allow use at your own risk. Just do yourself a favor a don't turn it on right away - there is so much excitement in the air of the start of a marathon & you'll miss it if your music is already blasting away. Regardless of how much pain & suffering you'll be feeling towards the end - turn off your IPOD and let the people around you cheer you towards the finish. Remember, depending on which marathon you choose, you get a lot of verbal support from spectators - you'll miss that if you listen to your IPOD the whole time. Trust me - music is a great motivator, but there is something truly special about the the people cheering you on along the course that music can't give you. As far as GU - it is a semi-liquid carb.electrolyte replacement. Some have caffeine, some don't. Try it on your long runs several times. Nutrition is huge when training & running a marathon - get a good book, read the bulletin boards and apply what you have learned. What you eat & drink prior to race day and how you hydrate race day can make or break you! Good luck! Continue to educate yourself.
