MILANO, ITALY - With a stunning second half, Portugal's 31 year old Helder
Ornelas took a surprising win in his marathon debut. Ornelas, best known as
a cross country runner (8th at the 2001 World Championships in Ostende and
5th at the 2002 European Championships), turned to the marathon and in Milan
he showed this distance fits him very well. He started slowly in the third
group, he crossed halfway in 1:06:13, 1:15 behind the leading pack, entirely
formed by Kenyan athletes, with pre-race favourites Michael Rotich, former
half-marathon world champion Paul Kirui, Frederick Cherono, and veteran
Japhet Kosgei.

Then he began his "real" race, running the second half in 1:03:46 and
overcoming some twenty athletes ahead. At 30 km he was 8th, then he ran a 5
km split of 14:54, and at 33 km he caught Rotich and Kirui, who had dropped
everybody else, and and at 35 km he pushed the pace again and dropped Rotich
first and then Kirui. He crossed the finish line just one second under the
2:10 barrier. Kirui closed 1:29 behind, while Italian runner Giuliano
Battocletti took the third place with his PB 2:11:58 (after dropping out of
the ING NYC Marathon last month); he reported some stomach problems.
Rotich, close to freezing, finished fourt, just 11 seconds ahead of 37
year-old Antonio Sousa, who is Ornelas's coach. Last year's winner Daniel
Cheribo, finished 13th.

The women's race was dominated by Hellen Kimutai, who ran a strong negative
split: she passed halfway with a time of 1:15:55 with Mexico's Angelica
Sánchez, Tanzania's Banuelia Mrashani and debuting Etiopia's Merima Denboba.
She pushed the pace before 25 km and closed with a solid 2:28:48. Sánchez,
who was 3rd in 2003, closed in 2nd, while New Zealand's Rebecca Moore took a
surprising third place.
